Famous Vegetarians: Adolf Hitler

Here is a stenographic transcript dated November 11, 1941 Hitler said, "
One may regret living at a period when it's impossible to form an idea of the shape the world of the future will assume. But there's one thing I can predict to eaters of meat: the world of the future will be vegetarian." On January 12, 1942, he said, "The only thing of which I shall be incapable is to share the sheiks' mutton with them. I'm a vegetarian, and they must spare me from their meat

A BBC series called "The Nazis: a Warning from History". It shows Hitler watching movies with animal cruelty and hiding his eyes until the scene of gruesomeness are over. The series also commented on the German Animal Welfare Laws that the Nazis introduced, which were unrivaled else that time.

In an attempt to underline the evils of meat, he told dinner guests the graphic stories of his visits to a slaughterhouse in Ukraine. There are accounts with various cooks and dietitians that snuck meat into his diet without his knowledge. There are many debates about the form of vegetarianism Hitler partook in.

He wasn't a real vegetarian, his favorite food was sausages I think. I've read that his doctor prescribed him that kind of diet because of his gas problems, but he wasn't a strict vegetarian. He was just an hipocrite that's for sure! He (and other nazis) wanted to project a more positive and ethical image of their movement by showing that they care about animals, they compared themselves with predatory animals and their oponent as sheeps to be slaughtered.

Thanks for the comment Seb. Obviously their animal comparison was an attempt at justifying genocide. We all know that the nazis were hipocrites. Nice to see one of their more subtle hypocrisies explored.
