Are You Missing Out On Life's Beauty?

At a Metro Station in Washington DC on the morning of April 8, 2007, a social experiment was played out on the public. This experiment was organised by the Washington Post to observe the reactions of the public to world acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell, who posed as a busker for an hour. Here is the footage of this performance:

On this morning Joshua Bell played a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.Shockingly the reactions were benumbed and revealed the self-obsessed nature of people that prevents them from seeing beautiful moments in life. Children were more perceptible to the music but were rushed away by their mothers. When he finished nobody noticed or applauded. This experiment raised questions about perception, taste and people’s priorities.

Realization...

  • In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?
  • Do we stop to appreciate it?
  • Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

If we let such a moment pass such as one of the world's most acclaimed and talented musicians playing beside a subway, what else are we missing, shouldn't we be more open and less self absorbed?
